About

Let’s see…

About me.

Many have gotten to know me through my other blog, “The News of the Day”.

However, since we’ve started a new adventure, I thought it would be helpful for me (and maybe others) if I blogged about it.

I am 67, soon to be 68 on Christmas. I am married, have children, grand children, horses, 2 labrador retrievers and a cat named Spot.

My career has been in hospitals. As an RN I have worked at bedside nursing in every specialty except neuro. I spent the last 18 years of my life in administration. I retired at 50. I worked hard, running my home, raising my child and working but loved every minute.

The last 6 years of my life have been devoted to my mom and my dad. I cared for them both in my home from which  they have both traveled on to our Yeshua Mashiach. Jesus Christ . I miss them so much…

I believe that everything I have learned til that time six years ago was just for this time in my life. My wonderful parents deserved so much and I am so thankful for them. I pray I did what was right and loving for them. I owe them so much.

Now, we have entered a new time, a new environment, a new milieu, you could say.

Our healthcare system is in jeopardy. And with it, as a soon to be Medicare recipient, so is my health and my husband’s health in jeopardy. Billions of dollars have been taken from Medicare and moved into the Affordable Care Act’s operating funds. Our president said we elderly must give up the operations we need and just ‘take the pill’. I suspect it may be cyanide? Or maybe Percocet? Who knows. He never says what he means.

So! To that end, we are taking total charge of our health and our lives.

Our health depends on:

  • the food we put in our bodies
  • the amount of movement we do with our bodies
  • the use and exercise of our brains
  • monitoring any systems that are giving us problems
  • an overall positive and joyful attitude in our lives which originates from the Holy Spirit’s fruit in us

That about says it!

That’s what this blog is about.

I hope you find it interesting and check it out once or twice.

That’s not me working out.

      Appreciate that, Hardknox!
We have already started this adventure but there is more to do. And I am hoping this blog will also help to keep us on track with our goals.
We are both very ‘up’ for this.

I like your new blog. It’s great.

I’m so impressed with you for taking care of your parents towards the end of their lives. I think it’s a shame more do not do what you did. When my Mom had a stroke I was working full time and OT but I was going to take her into my house and care for her, having a nurse come in while at work. But she died suddenly with another stroke in the hospital.

We have some things in common. I was a nurse too in my early years. I loved taking care of the patients.

But later I changed careers and moved into IT and made pretty good money. I loved that work too.

Yes, Medicare is not what it once was. I’m the same age as you, but don’t have my son or my husband anymore, but I do have my dog and cat.

Here is what I do on your list.
    I. I monitor what I eat because my Mom and Grandma had diabetes. I know I could get it and I don’t want it. So I try to keep my weight down all the time.
    2. I walk as much as I can and having Merlin, a shepherd requries that. Before coming out here on the farm, I walked my corgi Dakota (RIP) 3 miles a night. Felt so good.
    3. I exercise my brain learning new things all the time. I love it. And it keeps my brain working.
    4. You know as a nurse that we have that disease of always being concerned with anything that seems out of order with our systems and I do have them checked out.
    5. I pray all the time to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit to make me feel the best I can under any given circumstances and know that He loves me no matter what. I am wholly convinced in the power of prayer and what it can do for us.

Whoa, I sure did leave a huge comment. Sorry about that.

Aw, Pepper, thanks for your comments and for following this blog!

I didn’t realize you had been a nurse. It’s a great education for anyone. I’ve kept up with most medical care changes over the years. And it’s interesting how those principles we held to 40 years ago are no longer in vogue. Just shows that man’s knowledge is not always so good.

Sounds like you’ve got a pretty good handle on your own health, Pepper. That’s important to us all today, I beleive. Actually, it’s always been. After all, we are responsible for our own health. The doctors and various health care professionals are really only consultants we look to for expert opinion. In the end it is up to us to follow through, become educated on our own health weaknesses and take the action we know we need. People sometimes take more of an interest in understanding the care of their car than they do their own bodies!

Never apologize, Pepper, for a lengthy comment. The conversations that occur in these posts are sometimes more informative than the post itself! I hope you will continue to comment at length in the future!

    tannngl,

Thanks for allowing me all that space. I was bloviating. LOL!
I know things have changed in the medical field and not all positive. There is lots of technology but even that can let one down. I always operated on instinct and most of the time was right, (sometimes not a good thing).

I’ve put your new site on my blog list and look forward to your upcoming posts on here.

You weren’t bloviating!!! You were sharing!! I pray for your peace, Pepper.

A good example of our great medical knowledge:
When I was first a 17 year old student nurse, we kept new moms and post op belly surgery patients in bed for several days. (They needed their rest to heal). Since then we learned they need to be up and about right away, after the anesthetic gas wears off! Otherwise they are at very high risk for blood clots in legs and lungs and pneumonia!
What we thought we knew, we now know it was wrong.
      But most have forgotten that…
The more I know, the more I know I don’t know.

Pepperhawk and tannngl, kind of wish my Mom was alive to read you two talking “shop.” She often talked about the changes and advancements in medicine. I have said it before and mean it — nurses are special humanoids.
